Mama says, “Come downtown Saturday for a happy first birthday celebration!” Just in time for tax-free weekend in Arkansas, Kristie Anderson, owner of Mama Says Emporium, invites regular customers, vendors, downtown fans, and back to school shoppers to come by from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for cookies, punch, and a variety of special offers.
For customers who want to beat the heat, or pop in after visiting the Downtown Fort Smith Farmers Market doors open at 9:00 a.m.
Reflecting on her first year in retail – Mama Says opened August 1, 2015 – Kristie says she relishes the roles presented to her as opportunities. “I am a mom to my son, who inspired the store name, a listener for anyone who walks in the store, and a business coach to my vendors. This journey has brought me closer to God, relying on Him to work out what I can’t control.”
According to Kristie, August to December is prime time for retail so, for area artisans and budding entrepreneurs, the time is right to give low-overhead, high-traffic retail a try. Space is month-to-month and affordable.
A bit more about the store’s name. Kristie explains that the quest for a good name was almost as difficult as the sweat equity that went into getting the large space ready for 40 vendor stalls prior to opening last summer.
“My son was 4, and he was going through this phase, telling everyone who would listen that, ‘Mama says…’ Stuff that was absolutely not true! We were stunned at some of the things he attributed to me. It was hilarious. So I started asking the people closest to us what they thought about ‘Mama Says’ as a name. It seemed to spark conversations and jokes. It was memorable, and it might eventually look good on a tee. So ‘Mama Says’ stuck.”
